Sanders shows how bipartisan he can be – even as the most progressive candidate

Today, Bernie Sanders gave a speech at Liberty University laying out his platform for the upcoming election. Now, at first, this may come as some surprise to you. Why would arguably the most progressive candidate go to one of the most conservative schools in the country to give a speech? In one of the most clever campaign moves yet, Sanders advocates for a vibrant and healthy civil discourse. He concedes that the Liberty students don’t quite agree with him.

This could be a pivotal move in the campaign. Rather than playing the traditional game of “preaching to the choir”, Sanders is trying out something new – actually engaging with the opposition. He has showed the rest of the candidates, and the general public, that he can stand firmly on a progressive platform while simultaneously reach out with open arms to the other side to create a robust discussion about our priorities. It takes some guts to do so, and it doesn’t seem to be backfiring at all. He may be able to tilt moderate voters towards the left.
