Today Obama announced his #CleanPowerPlan to clean up the air, slow down human induced climate change, all while creating more jobs in the renewable energy sector and promoting research and development to new technologies.Watch the video here:
It’s hard to say whether he will actually be able to get this through. There will obviously be some strong push back from the coal and natural gas industry, especially since shale gas has been booming in recent years. Labor groups will also likely oppose the move because of the economic impact it will have on blue-collar working towns of the Midwest.
On the other hand, this is a small step in the right direction for environmental groups. Investment in new technologies may also have a multiplier effect in the economy that will negate the losses in productivity mentioned above. It’s hard to tell right now, but I surely look forward to seeing what happens if and when the Clean Power Plan reaches its potential.
